In an interesting turn of events, Renardo Sidney will be reinstated after being suspended for a fight in the stands with teammate Elgin Bailey at the Diamond's Head Classic in Hawaii. Bailey, a junior, has asked for his release from the school and will transfer. Both players were reinstated Monday, according to a release from Mississippi State Monday.
The incident in question took place only a few days after Sidney was suspended for his conduct during practice. Prior to that, Sidney -- whose tribulations have been well-documented -- was suspended by the NCAA for his entire freshman season and nine games his sophomore season.
Sidney, a McDonald's All-American in 2009, is averaging 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in his first two collegiate games. Bailey was averaging just 5.8 points and 4.3 boards a game thus far this season.
"Elgin told me of his plans to transfer, and we wish him the best as he moves on," MSU coach Rick Stansbury said. "Elgin has had to deal with some very tough injuries, but he's worked very hard to get where he is now. Wherever he ends up, I hope he's able to have a lot of success."
ESPN.com is reporting that Stansbury is working under the assumption that Bailey, not Sidney, was the instigator of the fight. And, according to Stansbury, had Sidney instigated the fight he would have been dismissed.
Sidney will return to the floor Saturday in MSU's conference opener against Alabama.
