Giants co-owner John Mara ended any suspense about whether Tom Coughlin would be back in 2011, saying in the postgame locker room Sunday that, not only will the coach be back, but that he never considered firing him even though New York missed the playoffs for a second straight season."There was never any doubt," said Mara, whose grandfather founded the franchise in 1925 and who inherited the team upon his father's death in 2005.
The Giants beat the Washington Redskins, 17-14, to finish 10-6 but lost the tiebreaker for the NFC's last playoff spot to the Green Bay Packers, who crushed them 45-17 last Sunday.
Coughlin didn't let on during his postgame press conference that Mara had told him last week that he would be back win or lose against the Redskins. However, after the owner announced the news, Coughlin resurfaced to say that he was "very appreciative, very grateful" to be returning for an eighth season.
