DENVER -- This is all new for Vince Carter. Never in his 13-year NBA career has he found himself playing for a contract. Then again, Carter wouldn't use those words. The way he looks at, he's just playing.
The Phoenix swingman will become a free agent if the Suns buy his $18 million contract for next season for $4 million by June 30, something that is very possible. But there's no thinking from Carter, acquired Dec. 18 from Orlando, that he's auditioning to either stay with the Suns or for his next deal.
"I don't approach it that way,'' Carter said in an interview with FanHouse before Tuesday's 132-98 loss at Denver. "I'm going to play basketball. I feel like I've seen guys making the mistake of trying so hard to play for that contract. You're not yourself. That's kind of been my approach, and I kind of let what I've done speak for itself.''
So far, his game is speaking reasonably well. After scoring 15 points against the Nuggets, Carter is averaging 17.1 points for Phoenix to raise his seasonal average to 15.6.
