A war of words ignited by Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips Monday turned physical a day later.
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and Reds manager Dusty Baker were both ejected Tuesday night in Cincinnati after a benches-clearing incident between the two teams.
The scuffle began as Phillips stepped into the batter's box during the bottom of the first inning at Great American Ballpark and began to jaw with St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina. Phillips' ritual is to touch his bat to the catcher and the umpire before stepping up to the plate. When he attempted to do so, Molina apparently kicked at his bat, then took off his mask and challenged the All-Star second baseman face-to-face.
Reds third baseman Scott Rolen, a former Cardinal, seemed to defuse the situation by separating Phillips and Molina quickly, even as the dugouts and bullpens emptied, but the confrontation hit another gear when Rolen and his former teammate, right-hander Chris Carpenter clashed.Padres
