EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- As a defensive end for the New York Giants, Justin Tuck usually delivers the sacks. But the six-year veteran and co-captain took an accidental tackle last Sunday against Washington. While celebrating a capture of quarterback Donovan McNabb, Tuck bowed and assumed a prayerful pose until teammate Osi Umenyiora unexpectedly jumped on him and knocked him down.
"He stole my bow, he stole my moment," Tuck said. "I was scared I might get fined. In sack dancing, you can't go to the ground."
As of Friday, Tuck said, the NFL has not penalized his celebratory tumble, one of few faux pas so far this year for Tuck, whose Giants take an 8-4 record into Sunday's game at Minnesota.
With 8.5 sacks, Tuck is second on the Giants behind Umenyiora's nine. Tuck leads in total tackles with 78 and is second in forced fumbles with five behind Umenyiora's eight.
Healthy again after playing with an injured shoulder in 2009, Tuck is back on the Pro Bowl track. Voted defensive captain by his colleagues before the season, the 6-foot-5, 274-pound Tuck seems suited to his greater responsibilities.
"I don't have to bite my tongue," Tuck, 27, said. Indeed. Two weeks ago, Tuck scolded his teammates in a locker-room rant at halftime to spark a come-from-behind, 24-20 victory over Jacksonville.
And when rookie defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul underachieved, Tuck asked the first-round draft choice "When are we going to get our investment out of you?"
