On Wednesday morning, the middle jewel of the Triple Crown was on a death watch -- and, thus, so was the Triple Crown itself. By noon, however, the patient, the 137-year-old Preakness Stakes, was revived and, barring yet another catastrophe, will be run on schedule in May 2011.
The Preakness received, literally, a reprieve from the governor. Maryland's Martin O'Malley brokered a deal late Wednesday morning between the state's horsemen and breeders and the owners of Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course, to schedule enough racing days next year -- 146, to be exact, the same as last year -- to both keep the Maryland tracks afloat and to guarantee that the Preakness will take place at Pimlico again.
It's a temporary deal, strictly for the upcoming year. It does nothing more than keep the event, tracks and industry in Maryland afloat. Yet, it was all anyone involved could ask for or expect.
