BYU Routs UTEP, Wins New Mexico Bowl

BYU kicked off the Bowl season with a 52-24 trouncing of UTEP Saturday afternoon in the New Mexico Bowl.

Freshman quarterback Jake Heaps threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns -- three to Cody Hoffman -- for the Cougars, while freshman running back Joshua Quezada ran for 101 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Junior tailback JJ Di Luigi also chipped in with a score on 98 yards rushing and Bryan Kariya also reached the end zone on the ground for BYU. Hoffman tallied eight catches and amassed 137 receiving yards on the day.

BYU finished the day with 515 yards of total offense, while UTEP finished with a grand total of 232 yards. The Cougars had the ball for close to 40 minutes in the game, nearly doubling UTEP's time of possession.

Though the Miners recorded a touchdown in every quarter, the narrowest quarter-ending deficit was the first at 17-3, as BYU blew it open with a 21-point lead at halftime, and a four-touchdown lead in the third quarter.


Despite 232 yards of total offense, UTEP did all of its damage in the air, as they rushed for negative 13 yards.

Senior QB Trevor Vittatoe, who was 14-of-29 on the day, finished with 245 yards passing, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. All three touchdowns were thrown to senior WR Kris Adams.

Altogether, BYU finishes the year 7-6, with six wins in their last seven games, while UTEP ends the season 6-7, with six losses in their last seven games.
