'Decent' Patriots Don't Impress Packers

Dan Connolly's hilarious kickoff return helped the Patriots overcome a bad night against the Packers.FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- When it was over -- when the numbers on the clock had gone to zero and 68,756 sighs of relief had been sighed, the Patriots were winners here Sunday night, 31-27 over the Green Bay Packers and surprisingly game backup quarterback Matt Flynn. It was the Patriots who improved to 12-2, clear frontrunners for home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs. It was the Packers who fell to 8-6, no sure bet even to make the NFC field in a season that began with Super Bowl expectations.

And yet, as the 15th zany Sunday of this increasingly ludicrous NFL season drew to a close, somehow it was the winning team that was beating itself up, while the losing team puffed out its chest and gave minimum credit to its conquerors.

"They're decent," Packers receiver Donald Driver said of the Patriots, who came into this game playing far better than any other team in the league over the past month. "I don't think they're a great team, but they're decent. I mean, give them credit. They found a way to win. But we had opportunities to beat them and we didn't take advantage."
