Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb finally spoke publicly on Tuesday about his benching by coach Mike Shanahan last Thursday, saying that the way the decision was handled was worse than the actual demotion."The way this whole thing went down to me was off, one that I strongly disagreed with because I've always believed that if you start something you finish it," said McNabb, who was the NFL's 25th-ranked passer with a career-worst 77.1 rating. "Communication is key in anything that you do. Normally ... you would hear about it on a Monday or a Tuesday, (not) Thursday going into a Friday practice. You would like to hear it early. If you hear it late, it kinda throws off the preparation for a lot of guys in the mental aspect of things. I felt I was pulled back by it. All of a sudden you get this news a couple days before the game, you do feel somewhat disrespected. You could have told me earlier or at least prepared me for it.
"Of course you get upset, (but) I didn't flip a desk over or kick a chair. Everything was handled awkwardly ... because of the timing and all the leaks ... and no putting out the fire. There was no, 'He's our quarterback and this is what we're doing.' Everything afterwards was like, 'there's no guarantee you'll be here (next year)' "
In fact, during his interview with Washington's ESPN-980, McNabb said that he learned that he would slip from being the backup to Rex Grossman last Sunday at Dallas and slip to the No. 3 quarterback behind Grossman and John Beck for the final two games from media reports, not from Shanahan or offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.
