The Panthers announced Friday that coach John Fox would not return in 2011. So what direction will the Panthers turn now?It would be a short ride into town for Bill Cowher. He lives up the interstate from Charlotte, N.C., and he could stay close to the home fires if he left Raleigh and became the new coach of the Carolina Panthers.
Fat chance.
Let's not forget, those were the Panthers trimming payroll last offseason -- so it does not seem likely the club would pay Cowher what John Fox was making, which is $6.5 million until Feb. 1, 2011, when his contract officially expires.
Dallas also is looking for a coach -- that would seem to be a more attractive alternative for Cowher. So would Denver, though Carolina may have an edge over Minnesota, which could have an opening if it doesn't retain interim coach Leslie Frazier.
