Sweden Upsets Canada at World Junior Hockey Championship

SwedenBUFFALO, N.Y. - Thanks to Sweden, there is no chance of a second straight Canada-United States gold final at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

The Swedes did their part in taking away that crowd-pleasing possibility with a 6-5 shootout win over Canada on Friday.

The Swedes won their fourth straight game and finished first in Group B and moved directly into the semifinals, while Canada, with three wins and one loss, finished second and now must play in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Switzerland is playing the United States, the defending champion, in Friday's last game (8 p.m. ET) and a Swiss win in regulation time would drop the United States to third place in Group A and set up a quarterfinal match against Canada. Subsequent wins by the U.S. and Canada would set up a semifinal matchup that most people wanted to see in the championship game on Wednesday.

None of that mattered to the Swedes, who were thrilled to knock off the Canucks.

"It is a great feeling to beat Canada in front of 18,000 people cheering for Canada," said defenseman Patrik Nemeth. "I've never beat Canada before and it is a fantastic feeling."
