K-Rod Goes Down Swinging

Filed under: MLBNEW YORK -- The Mets would like the public to know a couple truths about the ugly, fetid mess that washed up on the shores of Flushing Bay in the last 24 hours.

First, while the reasons Francisco Rodriguez blew his top and allegedly punched his fiancée's father near the team's family room at Citi Field are complex, they had nothing to do with Rodriguez's anger over not being summoned to pitch in a save situation Wednesday night. Phew, that's a relief, because goodness knows it does nothing for team unity when the prized closer lashes out over a manager's decision.

Second, Rodriguez, fondly known as K-Rod when the going is good, has been put on the restricted list for two days in this wretched barf bag of a season. Barring a successful appeal, Rodriguez will lose $125,683 of his $11.5 million salary, a terrible blow to his wallet given how the recession has crippled us all.

Perhaps fans can loan him their MetroCards so he can get to and from his upcoming court appearances. It would be such a nice, reciprocal gesture after all the joy the Mets have brought their peeps this year.
