TAMPA, Fla. -- From the head coach down, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tired of being reminded about their youth as they continue to search for a signature victory for this season.
"That's an excuse," coach Raheem Morris said.
Maybe so, but it probably has a lot to do with why the NFL's youngest team has yet to get over the hump against an elite opponent. Witness this exchange with defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, the $60 million rookie franchise building block, after Sunday's deflating 28-24 come-from-ahead loss to the NFC South rival and conference front-running Atlanta Falcons.
"The perspective is gonna be, 'Look, it happened again against a ranked team," McCoy said.
Yes, he caught himself. Instantly.
"That's college talk," McCoy said with a smile. "A top team. Y'all know what I mean."
We do. And the Bucs know what we mean when we talk about a learning curve for a roster full of kids.
