A report that the Chargers are poised to sell 35 percent of the team to AEG's Phil Anschutz is being denied by the team."There is no truth to the rumor out of Toronto that the Chargers have agreed to sell a portion of the team to Mr. Anschutz," said Mark Fabiani, the team's special counsel.
With separate speculation that Anschutz and Magic Johnson were teaming together to bring football back to Los Angeles, the report of Anschutz's impending purchase quickly caught fire. Fabiani also claimed to not know anything of Johnson's involvement in a potential sale.
AEG has recently proposed to the construction of a new football stadium in Los Angeles, with either the Chargers and Vikings rumored to be the team to play in it. The Chargers connection was made stronger when it was announced that owner Alex Spanos was trying to sell a minority stake in the team -- some or all of his team-largest 36 percent share. Spanos is 87 and experiencing dementia.
