Dirty (Quarter) Dozen: Teams That Made The Playoffs, But Shouldn't Have

Bernie KosarOn Nov. 7, the New York Giants went to Seattle, supposedly one of the most difficult road venues in the NFL, and jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead before cruising home, 41-7.

"Nothing feels right right now," Pete Carroll said of his Seahawks.

Well, here's something that might feel right -- or wrong, depending on your perspective.

The Seahawks could well find themselves the winner of the NFC West at 7-9. And the Giants, currently 7-4, might finish 10-6 and ...

a. Miss the playoffs entirely behind Philadelphia, Chicago, Green Bay, Atlanta, New Orleans and ... the Seahawks; or

b. Have to travel to Seattle for a wild-card game, the same fate that could beset any of the teams above if they don't win their division. Substitute St. Louis or San Francisco with a losing record for the Seahawks and you have the dilemma that is brewing for the NFL.

In fact, it's always been there, especially since the league divided in 2002 into four-team divisions. Given the parity of the salary cap, there seemed at the time a pretty good chance that there would be years when divisions could beat only themselves and no one else -- so far this season, in fact, the NFC West teams are 11-20 against teams outside the division with only St. Louis, 5-7 overall, at .500 (4-4).
