Sal Alosi, Jets Assistant, Suspended for Season by Team

Sal AlosiNew York Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi has been suspended for the rest of the season, including the playoffs, the team announced Monday night. Alosi was also fined $25,000 by the team for an incident during Sunday's Jets-Dolphins game.

Alosi tripped Dolphins cornerback/kick returner Nolan Carroll and apologized for his "inexcusable and unsportsmanlike" conduct after Sunday's loss. He also issued a public apology Monday, saying his actions were "irresponsible."

"After reviewing the facts and consulting with the league office, we determined that this was the most appropriate discipline," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement. "I have spoken with Sal. He understands the severity of his actions and has apologized to all parties involved in the incident. There is no place in the game for this type of behavior and his conduct falls disappointingly short of our expectations for anyone associated with the New York Jets. I have also reminded all members of the organization with sideline access that it is both a priority and their responsibility to maintain a safe environment."

Despite his admissions, many were calling for Alosi to suffer harsher consequences after he stuck out his knee out and tripped Carroll on a Jets punt return with 2:58 left in the third quarter. It appears that's just what happened.

As Carroll ran down the sideline to defend the return by Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, he was hurt when Alosi appeared to intentionally extend his knee to stop Carroll in his tracks. Carroll remained down for a minute on the field but later would return to the game.
