Michelle Konkoly, a freshman swimmer at the University of Georgetown, was admitted to a Washington hospital in serious condition after falling from a five-story window early Tuesday. Konkoly was transported to George Washington Hospital with an injured spine, broken ribs, a broken foot and a punctured lung from the fall out of a residence hall that was reported to authorities around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to DC Metro police.
Heather Oldham, a spokesman for George Washington Hospital, said Thursday she was unable to release the status of Konkoly, who was in serious, but stable condition earlier in the week.
Konkoly was conscious immediately after the fall and told police that she had opened up the window in her residence hall room because she was warm after returning from an off-campus house party. Police told WUSA-TV alcohol may have been involved.
"University officials are in touch with the student's family and friends to provide support at this difficult time and are investigating the incident in cooperation with local law enforcement authorities," school spokeswoman Rachel Pugh said in a statement.
A school spokeswoman said there was nothing new in regards to the investigation or Konkoly's condition Thursday.
Konkoly, 18, is a native of Eagleville, Pa.,and is described as a sprint freestyle swimmer in her bio on Georgetown's athletics website.
"As you can imagine, we are in shock," Les Konkoly, Michelle's father, told the Philadelphia Daily News.
Monday was the first day of classes for the new semester at Georgetown. The Hoya, Georgetown's student newspaper, reported that the school's vice president for student affairs, Todd Olson, sent an e-mail to students in the same hall.
"While the review of this very troubling incident is ongoing, out of an abundance of caution our facilities staff has begun a review of all windows in on campus residential buildings," Olson wrote in the email. "We are working to confirm that window stops are in place in all residential building that substantially limit the amount any window may be opened."
