Jim Leyritz Trial Begins With Uncertainty Over Eyewitness Account

Jim Leyritz failed to stop at a yellow light and ran through an intersection after it turned red, an eyewitness said on the first day of Leyritz's trial for DUI manslaughter.

"He was trying to catch a yellow light he wasn't going to make," said Garth Henry, a bouncer at a bar who is serving as a witness. But Henry's account was clouded when he admitted that he didn't look up until he heard brakes screeching. Because skid marks didn't appear on the road until after the light, it's possible Henry didn't see Leyritz actually miss the light.

Prosecutors promised, however, that another eyewitness -- this one a passenger in Leyritz's car -- will testify that Leyritz didn't stop at the yellow light before hitting and killing Fredia Ann Veitch. Prosecutors allege that Leyritz's blood-alcohol level was 0.14, almost twice the legal limit.
