Felix Hernandez won the 2010 American League Cy Young Award despite winning only 13 games, as voters looked past that number and credited the Mariners pitcher for dominance on the mound that often went unrewarded thanks to lack of support. The other numbers that made the difference, as Hernandez had hoped.
"It's not only the wins, it's the whole stats together," the pitcher said Thursday. "(Voters have) got to look at the whole stats. Strikeouts, ERA, innings pitched, opponents' average -- all the stats, man. They've got to be important."
And obviously they were, as Hernandez received 21 of 28 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America panel to easily outdistance the Rays' David Price and the Yankees' CC Sabathia.
