Bruce Pearl is nice guy. I reached that conclusion a couple years ago when he introduced himself to me on press row at an NCAA Tournament site. His Tennessee guys were fresh off of a win, and he and his coaching staff were scouting the next game that would produce their next opponent.
The Vols' seats were next to mine. As Pearl settled in, he looked my way, Pearl stuck out his hand and we shook. We exchanged pleasantries and a couple of laughs and chitchatted a little about his team and the road in front of them. Before the game was over, he stood up, said goodbye and departed with his assistants.
Pearl walked away on the planks of the riser that made up press row, not on water, as a post on his wife Brandy's Facebook page suggested was his normal ambulatory form early Wednesday: "Now I know of two Jewish men who have been crucified. Lord be with my hubby's spirit. We will get through this."
Jesus Christ. I'm indicating whom the post on Brandy Pearl's page was talking about and not using His name in vain, although wondering if I was doing so in this case would be an understandable suspicion.
By the time Pearl's team tipped off Wednesday evening against VCU, his wife's Facebook page was scrubbed of the comparison of him to the Christians' Lord. It was an appropriate action; as Christians would tell you, comparing anyone to Jesus, who has walked on Earth before Him or in Anno Domini, is inappropriate.
