It may be a backup plan in case Cliff Lee signs with another team, or maybe the Texas Rangers want to add another veteran left-handed pitcher to their rotation. Whatever their reasoning, the New York Daily News, citing a source, reported on Monday that the Rangers are trying to recruit Andy Pettitte.According to the report, Rangers president Nolan Ryan spoke with Pettitte about the possibility of returning to his home state to pitch for the Rangers.
This makes a lot of sense for Pettitte, who has made multiple statements about how difficult it is to play so far away from his family in Houston.
But what about Pettitte's declaration that he would only return to pitch for the Yankees? Or the fact that he hasn't completely decided to return to baseball for the 2011 season at all?
This is the time of year that Pettitte usually flirts with retirement, but he never actually heads home to sit on the porch in a rocking chair. Pettitte is a competitor; even at age 38, he's able to contribute to a starting rotation.
