Donovan McNabb Seems Destined to Find That Money Can't Buy Him Love

Donovan McNabbLANDOVER, Md. -- You might think that signing Donovan McNabb for five more years at $40 million guaranteed (and possibly as much as $88 million total) is a brilliant move by the Redskins to secure their immediate future. (Not really -- it's OK, but far from brilliant.)

Or you might think it's the dumbest player transaction this dysfunctional franchise and its short-sighted, star-obsessed owner have ever executed -- a reasonable theory in the wake of a 31-point nationally televised home loss delivered almost before the ink on the contract was dry. (It's not the dumbest, not as long as Deion Sanders, Adam Archuleta and Brandon Lloyd appear on the franchise's all-time roster.)

But here's what you don't know: if, as the Redskins and McNabb's representative have said is true, this contract extension completed Monday afternoon has been in the works for months, that Mike Shanahan has been on board with it all along, then what the hell were those two weeks of benching, excuse-blurting, story-changing, backtracking, leakage-and-denial and nonstop spinning all about?

What was all the drama about? The huge extension says that everybody is BFFs again: McNabb, Shanahan, general manager Bruce Allen, owner Daniel Snyder. No more coded messages, no more intermediaries, no more need to take the high road on anything. Everything that went on in the final two minutes of that loss in Detroit two weeks ago, and in its aftermath, was just a speed bump on the long road of an NFL season, apparently.

Two weeks of everybody in the D.C. metropolitan area, and well beyond, parsing every syllable passing between Shanahan's and McNabb's lips ... and by the time the next game kicks off, it's all irrelevant, because McNabb's future with the Redskins is secure, while Shanahan's apparently is no less so.
